Kids usually get bullied based on their complexion, race, beauty, size, gender, or religion. Normally, the society has a set of “Standards,” which may be right or wrong. Once someone fails to meet these standards, they are deemed “different” and becomes a victim of bullying.
In fact, bullying is a rampant issue in today’s society. Many people possess that false belief that just because they fit in the society, they now have the right to bully those people who don’t. What’s more alarming is that for most people, bullying is acceptable.
Bullying is a serious crime that should be given the seriousness it deserves. Help stop bullying by educating your children and instill good manners. They are the next generation.
What would you do if your child fell a victim of bullying? Here are some tips to identify if your child is a victim.
Be Attentive to Anything Strange Around them
As we all know, bullying has serious physical and psychological effects, including trauma. One alarming signs of getting bullied is a change of their behavior. When your once enthusiastic and energetic child suddenly becomes quiet and dull, this is a sign that something bad is happening to them. They may also lose appetite and withdraw from their playmates. Once you noticed these signs, it’s important to talk to your kid.
Reach Out and Listen to Your Kid
Most bully victims are hesitant to reach out to the elders for various reasons. One, they may have been threatened by the bully. Two, they are afraid that you might not believe them. And the list goes on. However, you should not let their fear take over their desire to end their misery.
It’s obvious that they need help, and you should be there to help them in every way. Ask them what’s wrong. Tell them that they can tell you anything, and you wouldn’t judge them for it. Show that you genuinely care for them. Be patient until they finally tell you the misery they’re in. It would also help if you let them talk to a psychologist for some counseling.
Don’t let them be alone
Your kid has already confessed, and you can assess the extent of the damage caused. Now, you can start to take measures to counter the bully. The first action to take is to have someone at your child’s side at all times.
Never let them be alone. That’s the last thing they need. Remember that your child is vulnerable now than ever. Since they’ve opened up to you, they expect you to protect them. Therefore, don’t let them be alone for a moment. Get someone to protect your child from their tormentors.
Talk to the Relevant Authorities
Now that you have appointed someone to guard your child at all times, it’s time for the next step. Inform the appropriate authorities about this problem. It can be their teacher, a guidance counselor, or the parents of your child’s tormentor.
Explain the situation to them in a nice and calm way. You may want to lash out at them for hurting your child, but approach them in a civil way. This way, you’ll be able to formulate logical steps to stop the bullying and the consequences should there be a reoccurrence.
