Depression is a common but serious mood disorder that affects how you feel, what you think, how you act, and the way you socialize and handle daily life. According to statistics, 15% of those who are clinically depressed end up committing suicide. Suicidal behavior is very complicated and varies with age, gender, and ethnic groups.

Before you take that leap off a cliff, take a drug overdose, purchase a rope, or shoot yourself, you might consider the following to avoid a not so visually acceptable death.

Feel lively

Take a deep breath. You’re alive, so live! Appreciate the things around you. By things, let’s start with the miracle that you woke up today and have a chance of enjoying life and change the course of your life. Life is a precious gift, so spare it.

Dance to the rhythm of the music

How can you feel alive when your playlist consists of emotionally draining and heartbreaking songs? You’re covered with all the emo you’ve been acting alright, maybe it’s time to take on a life and let some lively music take you to a better plane. There’s more to life than just sulking.

Open up

Your thoughts become toxic when they are harbored inside. Do not suppress your emotion. Learn to share your insights with somebody. Open up your heart to someone who understands.Trying to contain your thoughts will only make the situation worse.

Make new friends

You may not be sociable, but when what’s inside you is good, making connections will follow. If you have the sincerity to help others, people appreciate it. Talk to that grumpy neighbor, invite co-workers for a dinner, or go to movies with your associates. Eventually, you will meet people that fit you and form a new circle of friends that will accept you as you are.

Try new things

Trying new things can expand your horizons. Make a bucket list. You can travel to new or unusual places and have various activities to divert dangerous thoughts into excitement. Such activities include hiking, swimming, or an island-hopping. You can also do things that you don’t usually do. Take the challenge and start moving.

No bad blood

Do not harbor any bad blood. Instead, try to empathize whit those who hurt you. Maybe the grumpy lady at Walmart had a bad day; maybe the boss was extra unlikeable today due to pressure from the higher office or his nagging wife. Perhaps, the person you hate now may just be like you: alone, depressed and in need of understanding from the people around.

Know “what” and “who” to avoid

Avoid people who have hurt you multiple times. Why? Histories are there to learn from and, therefore, it must not repeat themselves. You have survived, so you shouldn’t go back yet you know that what makes you better is moving forward. It’s time to give new things a try.

Meditate

You can pray or do yoga. The choice is yours as long as you take in everything that’s happening, cope up with the bad occurrences and accept that life is imperfect. As such, you might as well live with it.

Do it!

The desire to better start from within. True, life is cruel at times. However, it’s upon you to turn the negative energy into positive energy to become a better person. Therefore, be happy and take action.
