Drugs is never a good idea. We’ve already seen so many lives and families destroyed by it and yet it’s still consumed (and consumes) millions of people around the world. It’s particularly devastating when we hear news about a famous, successful person passing away due to a persistent addiction or accidental overdose. Just this past decade, more than 10 Hollywood stars and Western celebrities had gone away too soon due to these substances. Not only that, even alcohol seems to be catching up as the next most common addiction that is taking more lives.
If that’s not enough to make you say “No” to drugs and possibly campaign against it, below is a short list of the most used addictive substances and the famous celebrities that have died from it.
Prescription drugs
Any drug that is sold and taken for non-medical purposes, such as to affect your mood or behavior, is sometimes considered a narcotic. Prescription drugs like pain killers, depressants, anti-depressants and relaxants all fall under this category. Sadly, it’s the top kind of drug that many celebrities have died from. This includes Dark Knight star Heath Ledger, who died in 2008 at the young age of 28 from accidental combined drug toxicity due to a couple of different opioid pain medications. A year before that, Anna Nicole Smith also passed from accidental drug toxicity due to a sedative and hypnotic drug mixed with another anti-axiety drug.
Some narcotics cause a cardiac arrest, which ultimately leads to death. This was the case for Michael Jackson, who tragically died in 2009 because of a lethal mix of more than 5 relaxants, from which he never woke up. Elvis Presley had suffered a similar fate in 1977 and had a cardiac arrhythmia due to over 14 drugs in his system aside from morphine and cocaine. In 2014, 81-year-old host and TV personality Joan Rivers died from a therapeutic complication with prescription drugs, specifically from propofol sedation. And more recently in late 2016, iconic singer Prince reportedly died of an accidental overdose from fentanyl, which is similar to morphine.
Cocaine
Cocaine, also known as Coke, is very popular among famous celebrities for its powerfully addictive effects. It’s a stimulating recreational drug that’s widely used at social events via snorting, inhaling, or even intravenously. Chris Farley died from cocaine and morphine overdose after a night of partying back in 1997. A similar incident happened to 23-year-old River Phoenix in 1993, causing him to collapse and convulse for five minutes right outside a Hollywood nightclub.
When Whitney Houston died in 2012, the world was in shock, more so after finding out that she had drowned in a hotel room bath tub and that her death was the effect of her heart disease complication and stubborn cocaine use. Freddie Prinze Jr.’s father, Freddie Prinze Sr., also passed from a cocaine-related death in 1977 after committing suicide by allegedly taking it with a sedative and then shooting himself.
Heroin
Heroin is a lot like prescription drugs that has euphoric effects, except it’s never prescribed and it’s illegal. Like Cocaine, it’s a recreational drug that can be snorted, inhaled and injected, but can also be smoked. Famed actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman was addicted to heroin during his younger years but was able to stay sober for 23 years until he relapsed in 2012. Just two years later, the 46-year-old died of an overdose of heroin and other drugs.
For non-users, this drug might seem a little intriguing for its “happy” feelings, but there’s obviously a fine line between that “feel good” amount and taking too much that leads to a lethal overdose. Sadly, 60s singer and self-professed addict Janis Joplin didn’t know that she may have bought and been shooting a much more potent heroin when she died in her home in 1970. Another famous musician, none other than 27-year-old Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, committed suicide by pulling the trigger on his head after shooting heroin and taking the infamous prescription drug, diazepam.
Alcohol
Alcohol may be multiple levels safer than any kind of drug, but it’s still one of the most common addictions that have caused the death of many famous celebrities – especially when taken with illegal drugs. This is what happened to 31-year-old Glee star Cory Monteith, when he suffered his own tragic fate in 2013 after mixing heroin and a large amount of alcohol.
Multi Grammy Award-winning soul singer Amy Winehouse was reported to be addicted to heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and alcohol, but she died way too soon at the prime of her career due to alcohol poisoning (with blood alcohol content of more than five times the legal drink-drive limit) in 2011 at the young age of 27. Jazz singer Billie Holiday suffered slowly from cirrhosis of the liver due to her prolonged alcohol abuse and finally died from complications of the disease (pulmonary edema and heart failure) in 1959.
