It’s important to take care of yourself and get the most from life. Below are ten practical ways to look after your mental health. Making simple changes to how you live doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take up loads of time. Anyone can follow this advice. Why not start today?

Why is having good mental health important?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Your mental health is an important part of your well-being. This aspect of your welfare determines how you’re able to operate psychologically, emotionally, and socially, among others. Considering how much of a role your mental health plays in each aspect of your life, it’s important to guard and improve psychological wellness using appropriate measures.

Other benefits of taking care of our mental health can include:

  • Improving our mood
  • Reducing our anxiety
  • Creating an enhanced sense of inner peace
  • Thinking more clearly
  • Improving our relationships
  • Increasing our self-esteem

Habits that can help build your mental health

Value yourself:

Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favourite projects, or broaden your horizons. Do a daily crossword puzzle, plant a garden, take dance lessons, learn to play an instrument, or become fluent in another language. By valuing yourself, you should also learn to be nice to yourself. This means that when you are feeling hard, then rather than being hard on yourself or constantly pushing yourself, you should try congratulating yourself or complimenting a past activity or the slightest action.

Exercise:

A famous saying goes around that’ “A healthy body leads to a healthy mind”. Cultivating exercise habits comes with numerous benefits, including self-respect, self-confidence, discipline, and taking some time out of your daily life for yourself. It is an act of self-appreciation and nurturing and helps you connect with yourself in a visceral way. Exercise doesn’t have to be overly complicated to fit into your routine. Even taking a short walk or climbing a flight of stairs can reduce stress and increase alertness. A regular exercise routine can boost one’s mood, increase concentration, and even help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Be mindful

Paying more attention to the present moment can improve your mental wellbeing. This includes your thoughts and feelings, your body, and the world around you. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.

Surround yourself with good people:

People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Make plans with supportive family members and friends, or seek out activities where you can meet new people, such as a club, class, or support group.
