The most sought-after divorce lawyer in Hollywood has just launched a cost-effective DIY online divorce service for the masses. The 50-year-old legal practitioner has previously represented the likes of Angelina Jolie, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Johnny Depp, Melanie Griffith, and Stevie Wonder. In addition, she has also provided legal counsel to the ex-wives of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson.
Known as the Disso Queen, a name she despises, in Hollywood, Ms. Wasser is often the first port of call when high-profile marriages must be dissolved. When asked about her new venture, she responded that it was time ordinary couples got the chance to go through a divorce process with ease and without their wallets taking a massive hit.
In the United States alone, 46 percent of all marriages end in divorce. However, the divorce rate has decreased in recent times owing to the high cost. On average, the dissolution of a marriage in the United States costs about $15,500. Legal fees make up the majority of this cost.
California is the state with the highest number of divorces in the USA. Over there, the average cost of a divorce with children comes to about $26,300. Miss Wasser herself charges $25,000 on retainer from her big-name clients along with $850 an hour for the number of hours worked.
It’s Over Easy
Her new website It’s Over Easy helps estranged couples divorce easily for as little as $750 per spouse in case of uncontested dissolution. There are five simple steps that take users through all the requisite documents (forms, financial statements, etc.). A facility for serving documents on a spouse is also available.
Apart from walking clients through the divorce settlement, the service also helps them deal with post-separation life while also trying to acquaint them up with a potential new partner. In this regard, partnerships have been formed with tanning salons, gyms, and dating websites.
Miss Wasser believes that no one should have to stay in a marriage just because they cannot afford to pay for the divorce proceedings.
And she believes that her alternative is a much better and easier option. She is of the opinion that a person is the best judge of his or her finances, about the nature and temperament of the kids, and hence in the best position to decide the outcome of a divorce, at least better than any judge out there.
A Divorcee Herself
A Berkeley graduate and mother of two, Miss Wasser went through a divorce after one year of marriage back in 1993. She never remarried and has since become a qualified divorce lawyer helping both big-name Hollywood celebrities and normal people like us to achieve an amicable divorce settlements.
She believes that the impact of a divorce is universal regardless of how famous or rich a person is, because by the end of the day, although the magnitude of the division of assets may be monumentally different, everyone feels the same kind of scares and sadness when undergoing a divorce.
According to her, people usually feel a great deal of embarrassment after a divorce, believing that they have failed at a crucial aspect of their life. But mostly, it is the uncertainty about the future, which a divorce brings, that hits people the hardest. And this sense is further accentuated when a person also has children in the equation.
Why Celebrities Have It Much Harder
The only difference with celebrity divorces is the heightened media scrutiny, as, in addition to all that has been stated above, they also have to deal with trying to explain their situation to the press.
From the moment celebrities file the divorce paperwork in the courtroom, to the time the proceedings reach their conclusion, each and every moment is captured and reported by the tabloids and even some of the most reputable newspapers around the world. To avoid such attention, many celebrities simply opt for a settlement that is reached out of court.
Wasser’s online service allows people to set their own terms in a much easier manner and avoids complicating the matter more than it needs to be. She further goes on to explain how antagonistic divorces can take an emotional toll on both parties.
On the other hand, an amicable settlement won’t result in so much frustration and anger. As of now, It’s Over Easy is providing services in New York and California while five more states will be added to the mix very soon.
